imagine a video game where you create a hero whose destiny is to save everyone, but throughout the game you start making harder and more questionable decisions, and the game gets darker and darker. and in the end you’re just standing there, clutching the controller and finally realizing you were playing the villain all along

when i was translating the french on the zone one background, i came across something i find interesting and strange, so i am sharing that here
mortis does not say “tunnel” in his notes - he says “hose”/”tube” - which, in most contexts (according to a french dictionary) refers specifically to the guts or intestines
at first, I thought he meant “gut annex” - which i interpreted to be a room for slaughtering cattle (since this also happens in zone one, specifically near the mines)
it wasn’t until I glanced at the other side of the picture “vers boyaux 1”, or “to the first hose” - it occurred to me that he was using this word synonymously with tunnels
i’m not sure if this is a quirk of french/belgian lexicon (that is to say, region-specific slang) or if mortis was intentionally drawing a connection between the smoke mines and a person’s internal organs
